The late 18th century onwards saw a major exploration of the Pacific. Encouraged by Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society, intrepid explorers like Captain Cook and Captain Flinders took with them professional artists who provided a unique record of the sights, the fauna and flora and the indigenous peoples they encountered. Artists like William Westall, Ferdinand Bauer, Augustus Earle, Conrad Martens and many more. The voyages were also at the cutting edge of scientific development and discovery, from the use of Harrison's chronometer for navigation and Charles Darwin's ground breaking research for his "Origin of the Species" to the pioneering metereology of Robert Fitzroy, Captain of HMS Beagle. In the course of 3 lectures, James Taylor provides a fascinating and richly illustrated insight into an age when art, science and exploration came together and the relationships between the leading personalities involved, with a flavour of maritime history and stories.

Dr James Taylor FRSA studied at the Universities of St Andrews and Manchester. He is an experienced Arts Society lecturer and former curator of paintings, drawings and prints at the National Maritime Museum Greenwich. His many publications include "Picturing the Pacific" and "The Voyage of HMS Beagle".
