Forthcoming visit.  a Summer's day out to:

STONOR PARK and GARDENS near Henley, the home of Lord and Lady Comys.

Thursday 24th July 2025

Hughenden Manor

Hughenden Manor is best known as the country home of Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and his wife Mary Anne, and more recently as a top-secret map-making facility during the Second World War. However, there's almost a thousand years of history stretching back before either story for you to discover.   The origins of the estate date back beyond the first records in the Domesday book. In more recent history the land was farmed, and the dwelling was a humble farmhouse. This building was only upgraded to a ‘gentleman’s residence’ when it was converted in 1738.

The Hughenden Manor we know today was remodelled in 1862 for Benjamin Disraeli by architect Edward Buckton Lamb. As prospective leader of the Conservative Party, Disraeli needed a suitable country seat, so in 1848 he bought the Hughenden estate and continued the process of Gothicising the house begun by an earlier owner, the antiquary John Norris

The cost is £23 for members of the National  Trust (membership cards to be presented on entry) – and £38 for non members The coach departs at 08.45 from Meadrow Car Park (Godalming) and picks up at Spectrum (Guildford) at 09.00.  The coach will return from Hughenden at approximately 3.30

Tickets will be available at the February, March and April meetings.

“BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir”better known as the “Neasden Temple”

The visit to the Mandir (Temple) will be led by a guide who will tell us about the building itself and Hindu religious ceremonies.

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a masterpiece of traditional Hindu design and exquisite workmanship that rises serenely amid London's iconic skyline. Using 5,000 tonnes of Italian Carrara and Indian Ambaji marble and the finest Bulgarian limestone, it was hand-carved in India before being assembled in London.

Popularly known as the 'Neasden Temple’, the Mandir is a traditional place of Hindu worship designed and constructed entirely according to ancient Vedic architectural texts – using no structural steel whatsoever.   Columns bedecked with figures from Hindu mythology support ornate ceilings, and domes with floral and geometric designs. Completed in 1995, the Mandir is surrounded by landscaped gardens, filled with lotus-shaped flowerbeds and ornamental fountains.

The tour takes about 90 minutes.

If you are interested there is an exhibition where
Visitors can learn about the origin, beliefs and values of Hinduism, the contribution of Hindu seers, and how this ancient religion is thriving today through traditions such as the Swaminarayan Sampraday no booking required and a nominal entrance fee (allow 30minutes).

There will be time to complete your visit with a meal at the delightful Shayona restaurant with traditional Indian décor and mouth-watering vegetarian cuisine, it is the perfect way to experience some authentic tastes of India.

Shakespeare’s London -a Tony Tucker walk.

The object of art is to give life a shape.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Most of us have visited Stratford-upon-Avon but come away without, perhaps, realising that in reality Shakespeare spent his working life in the City of London where he led groups of actors and theatre owners in the Square mile.

We visit sites from Blackfriars to Guildhall with connections to the Bard, his plays, his homes and his theatres.

Tony Tucker read Modern History at Oriel College, Oxford and then enjoyed a 40 year working life in the City.
He is a qualified City of London Guide, an accredited Arts Society Lecturer and Author.
Tony led our City walks in 2017 and 2018 so we know we will be in good hands.

Tickets at £35 will be available at the April  Meeting or from Kate Gooding on 01483 56 23 56 or by email at Kg@wagl.biz

Visit to the "new" Mary Rose Exhibition and the D-Day Story featuring the Overlord Embroidery

We will visit Historic Portsmouth for the "new" Mary Rose Exhibition : following a complete revamp in 2016 there are now views of the ship from all three decks and nine galleries through full length glazing. On the Upper Deck, visitors pass through an airlock and breathe the same air as Henry VIII’s flagship.  To bring the ship to life, state of the art projections of the crew were introduced, showing them going about their everyday lives in wartime and peacetime.

PLUS we will visit The D-Day Story

After a four year improvement and upgrade project funded by  the  Heritage Lottery Fund the D-Day Story opened its doors again in March 2018. Included in the project was an improved presentation of the acclaimed Overlord Embroidery : The story of the D-Day Landings of 6 June 1944 told across 34 hand stitched panels, designed by the artist Sandra Lawrence, running to 83 metres in length.

There are still a few Tickets available at  £37 these can be purchased at the  February meeting

VISIT: Emmett's Garden and Knole House

Emmett's Garden was laid out in its present form in the late 19th century by Frederick Lubbock, whose style was influenced by Gertude Jekyll.  He established an Italianate rose garden, a rock garden and areas to showcase his collection of exotic trees and shrubs.  We have a short stop here for coffee and a pleasant garden walk.

Knole House was originally a bishop's palace, then passed through royal ownership to the Sackville family; its long history has produced a vast collection of tapestries, paintings and furniture. Knole is undergoing a major restoration project and we are going to have a conservation tour "Past into Present", as well as time to walk round individually.  The Brewhouse Cafe is available for lunch and the surrounding parkland, with its herd of wild deer, is open for walks.
